Do Masonry BBQs Change Colour?

The simple answer is yes they do. In particular after the first few uses. The reason for this is because the brickwork and mortar would have stored moisture, which, would start to dry out whist in use. This will cause some colour change to your product.

A good way of combating this is to light a couple of smaller fires, purely to slowly dry out the moisture, bringing out less of an immediate colour change. This will also help prevent any cracks and gaps appearing in the product from sudden, intense heat.

Also worth noting that over time, as the BBQ will be a permeant fixture outside that overtime the effects of the British weather will also age and affect the colour/condition of the barbecue.

Are Masonry BBQs Any Good?

Masonry BBQs are a fantastic alternative to your more traditional outdoor grills, such as Charcoal or Gas powered BBQs.  Not only this, but it'll give your garden a real focal point, instead of just being an extra piece of equipment in your garden.

Masonry BBQs have the appearance of an old fashioned hand-built brick BBQ. Most can be fuelled by Charcoal or Wood thanks to thick double walled construction, however you'll want to double check the BBQ you wish to purchase has this element and also check if you can use both methods of fuel.

Size can vary, however most masonry BBQs have large amounts of cooking space, perfect for entertaining your family and friends. The downside against modern BBQs is that you won't have different burners cooking various items with different heat values.

Do Masonry BBQSs Have Any Other Function?

Thanks to the structured outpouring of heat, these also make a brilliant outdoor heater as well as the a real focal point in our garden. In most cases, masonry barbecues are sited near garden furniture to provide heat and convenient cooking for outdoor entertaining areas.

How Do You Use a Masonry BBQ?

Most Masonry BBQs can be fuelled by both Charcoal and Wood. However, Charcoal heavily favoured due to the following:

  • Chimney can become discoloured from wood being commonly used.
  • Soot and Tar can build up within the chimney and require cleaning. This can disrupt airflow.
  • Less Control over the heat. Consistent high heat can cause the item to crack and become damaged.

If you do decide to use Charcoal, Briquettes or lump wood charcoal burn cleaner and are easier to light. Both a electric charcoal lighter or a chimney charcoal are ideal for getting the fire going.
