From Dylan Thomas to Roald Dahl, garden summerhouses have been the very place where numerous writers, painters, and artists have been inspired to put their idea out into the world. It’s not surprising then that summerhouses are extremely popular for people who want a little sanctuary to pursue a hobby or if they simply just want somewhere relaxing and cosy to welcome guests.

What are garden summerhouses?

Garden summerhouses are similar to a shed but larger and made for more than just storage. Summerhouses are made to relax in and are decorative. Plenty of people enjoy using summerhouses as home offices to separate their work and home life, while other use garden summerhouses solely for entertaining guests.

A garden is not fully complete without a summerhouse sitting at the bottom of the grass area. They are an essential garden building; providing a great space to relax and store away garden furniture, garden games and more.

We provide summerhouses that have been both pressure treated and dip treated too, plus numerous styles with something to suit all budgets. Whether you have a large or small garden, there will be a summerhouse at a size that will fit the space you have, giving you that ideal outdoor space to enjoy your time.

For more traditional buildings for garden storage, see our shed section.

Does my Summerhouse Need a Base?

We recommend completely flat and firm surface for your summerhouse to go on, to ensure the longevity of your garden room. This can include wooden decking, concrete patio slabs, or a complete concrete base. The two main problems with putting a wooden summerhouse straight onto grass is due to the damp from the ground, as well as an uneven surface.

Damp and wet ground can cause the floor and walls to rot from below, and can damage the structural integrity of the building and limit its lifespan. It's important to ensure that the floor in completely flat, which grass is not.

Although grass may look flat, slight variances at ground level may be exacerbated in the joints and corners, pulling the summerhouse out of shape. Even a few mm difference at base level can cause severe problems with your summerhouse, and again limit the lifespan.

Do Summerhouses need planning permission?

Whilst you would assume with the wide variety of summerhouses on the market, and the number of houses that have one, that planning permission would not be required, however this is simply not the case.

Small buildings, as well as temporary structures (28 days or less) tend to not require planning permission. Larger buildings and more permanent additions however do need to seek planning permission. Other reasons outside of the footprint of the summerhouse which may lead to the requirement of permission include:

  • Covenants of the Deed of the Property - This can be found on new builds, where the developer wishes to keep new homes in keeping with those on the same new estate. Restrictions on additions to your new build property can extend from garden buildings to more simply modifications, such as the installation of a satellite dish.
  • Conservation Area - Some councils group particular historic or attractive properties/plots into conservation areas. This provides a similar outcome to the point above, meaning the area of houses all look in keeping with one and another. This is very common with traditional 'chocolate box cottage' villages.
  • Listed and/or Area of Special Scientific Interest - Properties that have been listed can require a lot of red tape to allow any modification or changes. This is to preserve the nature beauty and historic nature of the property.

Purchasing your own summerhouse, depending on your requirements, can be expensive. It is always worth enquiring with your local authority if in doubt over planning permission to ensure you are safe to erect such a building prior to any financial outlays.

How long will a summerhouse last for?

As with all wooden products, the structural integrity through suitable base and treatment/preservation are the main factors when taking into account the lifespan. Summerhouses tend to come dip treated, which is where a top layer of wood stain is applied to protect against rot and mould.

However once this fades away through weathering, the raw wood is exposed and would rot away. To combat this, restaining and painting the shed will improve the lifespan, and keep the timber protected.

If correctly looked after and treated, you can expect a 12mm shiplap wooden summerhouse to last around 10 years.

Differences between summerhouses and sheds?

Summerhouses and sheds are similar. In many cases they share components such as side walls and doors. There are several key differences between the two though, despite being structurally similar.

Summerhouses tend to be more varied in shape, often being corner configured like the Hampton and Barclay. This means that they can be easily fitted into garden corners which is and efficient and resourceful use of space. Sheds on the other hand tent to be traditional quad designs, with 4 right angled corners in the footprint.

As a rule of thumb, you tend to get more windows in summerhouses, which makes sense in allowing light into the interior and to look outside when seated inside. As sheds are more practical, costs are cut in providing glazing as wood tends to be a cheaper material and easier to mass produce.

Most summerhouses and sheds aren't insulated, meaning that the heat retention is similar for both. With this in mind, further work might be needed to be carried out for summerhouses (such as insulation and cavity filling) to make the building habitable in the cooler months.
