Most single garden gates come in the conventional three foot width, and are not available in smaller widths. The only way to get a smaller gate would be to manually remove the back frame, and cut down to size at your discretion through yourself or a trades person. However, this may void the manufacturers warranty.

If you do not have an appropriate frame to hang your gate from, then a wooden post is the logical and practical solution. The size of the post depends on the height of the gate. Ideally, you want the post to be around 2 foot higher than the height of the gate, and for this excess 2 foot to be dug into the ground and concrete in.
