When cleaning furniture before applying an outdoor wood stain, it’s best to begin simply with mildly soapy water to remove any build-up of dirt and moss. Try and resist the temptation of using a pressure washer as these can damage the wood's structure and spoil the appearance and integrity of your furniture.
For more stubborn staining, try gently sanding to remove it. Then be sure to brush away any dust left behind before using a stain or shed and fence paint on your precious furniture.
When applying a stain, it's important to consider the current condition of the wood. For example, treating wood with an old stain, you will want to remove this previous layer before applying the new one. Old outdoor wood stain tends to show through any newer application, making the finish appear blotchy.
However, a thorough clean before applying the fresh coat should work fine if you are applying the same type of stain in the same colour.
In terms of the application itself, it is best to thoroughly mix your stain or shed and fence paint to ensure an even colour. Protek have a range of products which we retail, each with their own key advantage and functions. Shed & Fence Stain is the most basic product, and is a water-based equivalent to creosote style products. This thin stain has a matt stain finish, and resins & waxes make it water repellent. If a most basic top layer stain is what you are looking for, this is for you.
Wood Stain & Protector is more premium than Shed & Fence Stain, and can last up to 4 years. With a great range of colours available, this soft and flexible wood stain coating penetrates the top of the timber for water repellency. This is a mid-quality product
Protek Royal Exterior is a premium product, similar to Ronseal & Sadolin type products. With over 56 colours, it has a thick paint-like consistency but the coating doesn't look as dense or thick as wood paint. As well as protecting your wooden products, this acrylic resin and polyurethane paint is hard wearing, and can last up to 5 years. It is also suitable for both hardwood and softwood.
So if price is no object, Protek Royal Exterior is the best option, due to the high range of colour choice, ability to use it on vertical and horizontal boards, and that use it on soft-wood or hardwood. However, all Protek products come with a protective quality, so if you are looking to save money, the Wood Stain & Protector may be a good shout.
