What type of paint should be used on a fence?

We would recommend a water based low VOC option such as those by Protek. Their shed and fence stain comes in a variety of colours, and the low viscosity means it can be quickly applied through a spray hose or by brushing. With a coverage of 10m² per litre per coat, it also is a cost effective solution.

Low volatile organic compounds also make this an environmentally friendly option, and in turn harmless to pets and plants. This is important when considering how close plants are to the fence, as some acrylic paints can be harmful.

The choice of colours available also means that as well as protecting against mould, algae and rot, this water repellent paint can be used to create a colour scheme in your garden.

Can you just paint over a fence?

Pressure treated items and fencing may look like they arrive with a blue-green mould on the surface. This isn't mould, but the remnants of pressure treatment. As this preservative is injected deep into the wood, the salts sometimes secrete to the surface and can be seen on the outside.

If this is showing, we would recommend lightly sanding down to clear these salts before applying paint. In situations where you are painting already weathered wooden fencing, you should brush down the fence to clear of any dirt and debris before applying.

Generally though, if a fence panels has had existing dip-treatment or pressure treatment, it is fine to paint over.

Do I need to prime a fence before painting?

Our shed and fence stain is an all in one solution, meaning that you do not need to prime the wooden fence before painting. If you are painting metal fencing, some paints like hamerite come with primer included. Simply brush off the rusty areas, and apply the metal paint on straight onto the metal. No primer or undercoat is needed.

What is Gravel Board?

Gravel board is sometimes ignored when one puts a fence up, however it holds key advantages in providing an excellent finish to your landscaping plan. Gravel Board is a horizontal style feature, which sits on top of the ground and below the actual wooden fencing. This takes the wooden fence off the ground, to reduce the risk of the fence rotting, as it won't get as damp. This can be beneficial for the lifespan of your fencing.

Another key advantage of gravel board is that it looks good! By combining wood with concrete, this gives a contrast in material, feel, and colour, and can help to blend in patio areas with the fencing.
