How to install wooden fencing?

As a rule of thumb, wooden fencing tends to be installed in the same way. We would use the below technique to install fencing.

1) Measure out your fence panels to determine what gaps are needed between the posts

2) Dig out holes into the ground ready to concrete pressure treated wooden posts into. These need to be 30-60cm within the ground. For example, if you have 6ft high fencing, you may need to consider a 7 or 8ft fence post, where the excess will be concreted within the ground.

3) Put the posts into the dug out holes. You will need to ensure posts are level to the ground, and also to each other, using a spirit level. Lightly hold these in place, allowing enough slack to ensure the fence panels can fit between the posts.

4) Put the fence panels between the posts, ensuring they can fit into place.

5) Once you've determined the fence panels can fit between the posts, concrete in the fence posts using cement or concrete.

6) Allow the posts to set into place. Do not install the fencing prior to the concrete being completely set

7) Using either U-Clips (if you are lowering/sliding the fence posts in from above), or L-clips, put the fence panels into place.

8) Using a drill and wood screws, attach the fencing to the posts using the clips.

You may also want to consider gravel board to gain height and to stop the wooden fencing from touching the wet ground (thus reducing the onset of rot).

Once the panels are in place, you may wish to paint these to match a garden setting.

Are Fence Panels Made to Size?

This is dependent on the style and design, however much of our metal fencing can be made to your bespoke specification. Assuming the fencing doesn't have a scroll design, like the Burbage Stirling Range, most metal fencing can be cut down to your requirements. A fence pane would never exceed 6ft (1.83m), as the structural integrity would be become weaker in the centre as it exceeds this size. If you were looking to fit a 8ft gap for example, this would consist of twos time four foot width panels, with a metal partition post in the middle.

For a quote on our metal fencing, browse through our made to measure fencing department, and view our wide choice of custom sized products. Simply use the quote calculator on the product page (by typing in your height and width requirements) for an instant quote.

Unfortunately, wooden fencing is not available to bespoke measurements at this moment in time. If you're looking to completely replace your garden perimeter, feel free to look at our custom sized metal and wooden gates.

Can fencing reduce noise?

Most fencing is designed to block views, rather than to drown out noise. Although some fencing may reduce the noise by up to 30 decibels, if you live near a busy road the chances are that you will still hear traffic even with fencing.

Most highways include natural sound barriers too, such as trees to reduce the noise. If you are expecting the noise of traffic to be completely eradicated then fencing alone will not completely cut out the sound.

Do fencing posts need to be treated?

We would always recommend pressure treated fence posts for wooden fencing. This is as the best practice of erecting fencing is to dig the fence posts into the ground (between 30 and 60cm), and concreting into place. This gives a really strong foundation for the fence panels to attach to. Pressure treatment delays the onset of rot and mould, and being so close/within damp ground means that prudent care needs to be taken.

Whereas dip treated wooden posts are available, as per sheds, summerhouses and other wooden items, the standard recommendation is that these need treating every 6-12 months as the top coat dip treatment wears away with the weather. With posts that are within the ground, it is impossible to retreat or paint the parts of these posts which aren't accessible (dug into the ground), meaning that we would always recommend pressure treated posts when they are dug into the ground.

Fencing with trellis tops

For a more ornate finish, there are fencing solutions which come with trellis built into it. This adds extra height to the panels, and can be used to create a more natural finish by trailing climbing plants.

The Grosvenor and Halkin panels by Rowlinson offer two distinct styles; one has a curved 'more traditional' style, and the other is a more contemporary linear design.

Adding too much weight to fence panels with climbing plants like Ivy and Clematis can create pressure on fence panels. If the fence posts are not concreted in, the added weight can cause a fence to fall. We would also advise pruning and cutting down any growing plants to reduce to risk.

Is Rowlinson Border Roll Easy to Fix?

Rowlinson Border Roll is a simple way to improve your garden border and style. The best part is is that it is simple to install; coming with spikes to simply mallet or hammer into the earth. This unique spiked design allows easy fixing, and the roll can be curved to ensure perfect alignment to your border.
