What Size Post Do I Need for my Fencing?

For standard 6ft x 6ft wooden fencing, the most secure recommendation is to go for posting around 8ft in height. This would provide enough excess post to be submerged beneath the ground, and concreted in for a secure fix. With roughly 2 foot of post beneath the ground, this increases the rigidity of the fencing you have. Another option is, assuming you're going for 6ft x 6ft panels, is to bolt the post down via anchor bolts. However, this is not as secure as concreting the posts in. Shop for accessories to browse our anchoring feet if this is a preferred method.

What is a H-Post?

A H-Post is different to a standard post, as it comes pre-cut with a ridge to slot your fencing into. The name comes from the fact that if you view it from the top, it will almost look like a H shape, with two vertical ridges to slot your fencing in on each side. H-Posts are an easy solution to hosting fencing, as once you slot the appropriately sized fence panels into it, they can simply be nailed/screwed into place.

View our Grange Elite H Post, which is available is different sizes.

How do you Attach a Post to a Fence?

The most common way to fix a fence panel to a post is through the use of metal clips. We have many available in our accessories section, and the Metpost U Shaped Clip is available in 4 sizes. Simply nail/screw the back of the clip to the post, slot the fence panel into the gap, then nail/screw the fence panel onto the clip through the sides of the clip.

How many U-Shaped clips you require would depend on the weight and nature of the fencing, but generally we recommend around 3 or 4 on each side (i.e each post would have 3-4 clips on each side of the posts).
