For those who wish to buy and forget, without the need for maintaining, it may be best to steer clear of wooden storage, and go for plastic models. The XXL storage box by Keter is always a popular choice, mainly due to its large capacity and longevity. Arriving flatpacked, this cushion box is weather resistant, and comes complete with hydraulic struts for ease of opening.
A smaller alternative is the Rowlinson Graphite coloured storage box, which maintains that same grey appeal, but has a smaller size.
Wooden products are versatile, but need routinely treating and staining to protect from the elements.
There is a risk in advising a product to be fully waterproof, as the UK climate can lead to water ingress. This may happen with condensation coming from the atmosphere within the box, so although it may protect from the rain, the contents may still be susceptible to damp. However, whilst we wouldn't advise our storage to be watertight, it is weather resistance meaning that your contents should remain dry from the elements.
Some boxes have the benefit from coming with an internal zippable liner included for added protection, such as the Rowlinson Prestbury Cushion box.
Keter storage boxes, like the hi-store and XXL deck box, are no designed to be fully waterproof. There is no silicone seal to stop water ingress, as the lid is only shut down rather than fully sealed. Whereas this would tend to keep the contents dry in most scenarios, in storms this can cause a problem should the rain by hit by a driving wind.
Their boxes are water resistant however, as come with a UV treated plastic which does not rot.
Not all Keter boxes are designed to be sat on. Where standard boxes like the XXL can take around 40kg weight, they are not designed or reinforced to be used as a seat.
The Iceni and the Hudson stores are designed to be sat on, but as a result of the reinforced and smaller components (which can take the strain of someone sitting on them), results in far less storage capacity.
For comparison, the Iceni has a capacity of 265 litres and can be sat on, whereas the XXL Deck Box holds over double the capacity (570 Litres) but can't be used as a seat. Besides, with a height of 86cm, the XXL storage box is impractical to sit on compared to a traditional bench.
Keter storage boxes and sheds are designed in a way where they reduce the need for screws and fixings, and put more emphasis on 'clicking' the components into place. There are still screws needed for the construction, but far less compared to a wooden storage unit.
The way the components click into each other means that they aren't designed for route assembling then taking apart. We wouldn't recommend intentionally disassembling Keter storage units, as if one of the clips which are built into the unit breaks or snaps, it may stop the whole unit being rebuilt.
Storage boxes are made with the same quality as sheds. For example, the Denali Deck Box features the same Duotech technology used in their larger range of sheds. This is consistent across all of our storage - just as the product is bigger (say on a wooden shed compared to storage box) meaning it is more expensive, does not necessarily make it more superior in quality.
The main reason for choosing a shed over a storage box is access and capacity. Storage boxes are smaller and have less capacity, and also if they only have an opening lid it may make contents at the bottom harder to access. Sheds have the upper hand in that all come with a pedestrian door on them for easy access, and typically tend to be bigger.
If you are looking for easier access for larger lumbersome items, choose a shed. For a quicker solution for smaller items, a storage box may be best.
